This last summer, James wanted to create a Japanese Raku teacup, so we visited our two master's studio.
They live an hour from central Kyoto, in an area called Kameoka, where they have their studio among beautiful mountains. Next to the studio, they have a beautiful traditional house with Japanese garden.

On the right is an intern, Mr. Nessim Cohen who wants to spread Japanese tea culture in France.
The Fourth Sasaki Shoraku was not there. It was his cup James found in Kibune, that drew us to him.
(Shoraku-gama)
Since last fall, we had not seen them a while. We greeted and chatted at the gallery. Then our master described the proceedure at 1:30 pm and took us into the studio.
There, several disciples were working by the windows! In the same space, there was a table for us to sit down. The Third Sasaki Kyoshitsu sensei taught us in person!!!
He gave us a chunk of clay and very casually told us what to do. It's not easy as he says, of course! I immediately regreted our decision. Hmm, if we spend this much money on our cups, wouldn't it be better buy our mater's cups!?
However, it's too late. All we can do is our best!
Our first trial cups were bad, and the second ones were a little better.
First we formed the cup, then chiseled and scraped it, but we needed to dry it for an hour before sharpning. We moved to the Japanese house and were served matcha. Mr. Nessim wore a Japanese kimono-type clothing, and talked to us about tea culture, then he served matcha in a very serious way.
Then we moved back to the studio and started sharpning our cups. Sharpning requires more attention than forming. James accidently oversharpened, so our sensei halped him re-form the cup. I enjoyed the process more and more as I proceeded and started loving my cup.
Our sensei checked our cups several times and finally gave us the final okay. We were done! We went back to the gallery and had a cup of tea. I realized then how tense I was during the process!
Our cups were glazed, fired, and sent to our home in the United Sates.
When we opened the package from Japan, two rich, black cups appeared! Wow, wonderful!
Of cource, these are not like our master's cup, but still, they are very lovely!
Now I'm very much looking forward to having matcha with this cup. The color and shininess of the black glaze is actually very attractive. It was a once in a lifetime experience, the only cups like these in the world.
There are six Raku studio in Kyoto, but this one is the only studio which lets us come make our own Raku teacups.
We didn't know anything, but we found our master's studio and visited. Later, we knew that we can make cups with their guidence, and we did. How lucky we are!
If you are interested in this whole experience, please contact through the Shoraku-gama website. You will have a great time there.
